Owners of electric vehicles who intend to install a home charging station are being cautioned about new legislation that may have an impact on their plans.

New regulations will take effect starting on December 30, 2022, to assist drivers of electric cars who want to charge their cars at home.

Following the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Rules, which went into effect in June 2022, the most recent Schedule 1: Security compliance regulations are being implemented.

The goal of these new rules and specifications is to secure home charging devices from hacking and cybersecurity threats.

It strives to ensure that any charging station should offer enough protection to the electrical system, the pertinent charging station, and the owner's personal information.

From December 31, 2022, any installers seeking to install non-compliant EV chargers will need to request prior authorisation from the Office for Product Safety and Standards.

In order to protect people's personal information, people must also make sure that the charging point has a unique passport and was not set by the owner.

On the GOV.UK website, the government has provided instructions on how charge point operators can abide by the new rules.

To enhance the rate or duration at which electricity flows through the charge point, it must have smart functionality, including the capacity to send and receive information and to react to signals.

A measuring system that is visible to the owner of the information should be included in order to compute the amount of electricity that is imported or exported as well as the duration of charging.

The rules announced in June were created to guarantee that all chargers for use at home and at the office support smart charging.

With the help of smart chargers, drivers can choose when to charge their cars, ensuring that it has enough power for when they need it.

If they have an EV-friendly home tariff, which offers drivers the possibility to save hundreds or even thousands of pounds annually, this is really helpful.

One of the biggest home EV charge providers in the UK, Ohme, has comforted drivers who may be worried about their personal charger.

"According to Ohme CEO David Watson, chargers already meet the most recent security standards and now do so before the deadline"
